What makes for compatibility?

There are 4 elements – earth, water, fire and air, and 3 qualities – cardinal, mutable and fixed, which combine to create the 12 zodiac signs. At a basic level, compatibility between two signs can be intuitively predicted from these essential building blocks.

Earth is mostly concerned with mundane practical, physical matters, and uses common sense to make decisions about real things. It is stable, yet passive, and needs external stimulus to get going otherwise it will tend to preserve the status quo and lose sight of ideals and vision.

Fire points to the most masculine of energies. It is active and dominant, energizing and transformative. A restless spirit, it must force things and people along whether or not they are ready and willing. Emotions like enthusiasm and anger are much likelier than empathy or sadness.

Earth can be helpful in bringing fire’s inspiration down to the ground, although there may be constant tension and no real sense of deep rapport.

Whereas elements tell us about psychological and philosophical characteristics, qualities are to do with modes of creativity and reactions to events.

Cardinal takes the initiative to begin things, and responds to external input with counteraction, thereby setting up a second impulse, promoting dynamism. Fixed signs have the power to hold on, they sustain and stabilize, resisting changes and endure against outside forces. Cardinal and fixed work well together if both are positive (air or fire), or both negative (water or earth), otherwise there can be considerable stress and misunderstandings.

So is all this serious or just a light-hearted bit of fun? Well the answer to that question is up to you because, like with every thing else, you get back what you put in. Even though for thousands of years, millions have taken astrology very seriously indeed, perhaps we actually should all begin with a healthy degree of doubt, because it’s good for the soul to be uncertain about life’s meaning.
