At first, unaware of our ignorance, we have a reflex tendency to be cautious and reluctant to accept input that might not align with our self-image. Our old opinions although once new, have actually become familiar and secure aspects of our identity.
Hello is about attention, openness, exchange and communion
Out of curiosity, we open up to new ideas. Perhaps firstly this can be as entertainment because it fascinates the mind, perhaps later from a deeper interest and an inclination to learn skills and knowledge that may improve our ability to take up a better position in the community and earn our living in more pleasing way.
Thanks is about appreciating, valuing and giving from the heart
Taking on new material is more than a task for the mind, and in time there grows a love of the subject and a real appreciation of its worth. This promotes embodiment as we feel a greater degree of enthusiasm until we are able to learn how to ‘walk the talk’.
Goodbye is about realization, decision, completion, and moving on
What once had been a strange collection of seemingly disconnected fragments, now can be realized in its integrity as a whole teaching. It may be necessary to go back to the beginning to complete what was overlooked and get the basics entirely integrated as a firm foundation for moving on to the next level.
Please is about vision, intention, cooperation and prayer
Having graduated to an advanced level, we initiate new studies out of the old, perhaps advancing a particular aspect of enquiry, putting forward a new way to view things, new applications and a better sense of how this subject relates to others. Horizons are expanded.
Sorry is about responsibility, remorse, repair and release
Preconceptions have to be relaxed about borders between subjects since compartmentalization is no longer useful or even feasible. In some sense we begin to feel how imperfectly we represent the knowledge to others and learn how we must reluctantly offer an incomplete picture to beginner students for want of their ability to grasp the larger whole. Our expanded knowledge teaches us how little we really know and therefore the appropriateness of humility.
Yes is about permission, acceptance, agreement and surrender
We become an aspect of the teaching, a conduit that allows knowledge to pass through from the subtle realms into life. This becomes possible as we surrender more and more completely until we serve the teaching ideal.
